Thoughts from the workbench of Radical RC. The online retailer of electronics and kits for radio control aircraft. Dave Thacker shares his thoughts and knowledge of electronics, batteries, kit design and overall enjoyment of the hobby.
Gil Weiss from southeast PA sends a beautiful photo of his Micro Stick. Just test flown. Looks Great Gil!
Several years ago I built a Micro Stick. The kit went together very nicely. The little plane sat on a shelf until today. I enjoyed the last nice day of calm warm weather here in SE PA and test flew the plane. It was a real Hoot! Flew great and had an unbelievable roll rate. Landed fine. Other than add some more “expo”, no changes were required. I will keep this plane in my active fleet from here on out.
Enjoyed watching a CV-22 Osprey arrive in front of our shop. The United States Air Force Museum is across the street from “US”. Osprey pilot dusts the snow off our roof. 😉 He put on a short airshow, bank angles easily up to 70 degree’s and a nice dirty pass with the rear ramp open. What a view we have here.
“Hello Dave…just a quick note about my recent order with you folk. All to often we let opportunities slip by to offer commendation and I didn’t want to let this one pass. I just had to say many thanks for you prompt shipping and the incredible products you have made available for the little Dremel 580 Table Saw. Your “table saw set up jig kit” is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I was getting so frustrated trying to get my newly acquired 580 saw properly set up that I was ready to sell it and simply go back to using my full sized Dewalt 745 when I stumbled across you site and accessories. In my humble opinion I think everyone should own your setup jig! What a wonderful and totally affordable accessory that takes all the guess work and frustration out of saw setup. Keep up the good work and I hope all the other accessories pictured on your site such as the miter slot slides will at some point be made available as well.
Check out Kern Hanson’s Slow Stick Bipe creation. I can see parts from various models and he altered the wing mount system to hold the motor a bit higher than the stock setup would have been. The whole point with Slow Stick mods is to do it your way. Great Job Kern!
Dave here’s a few pictures of a Slow Stick Bi-Plane I built using a couple of your SS hop up parts. It’s very stable and fly’s nice and slow 🙂
I am relatively new to RC Flying and want to commend Radical RC on a truly great site, company, etc. that offers great products at good prices with GREAT service. In addition, a few times I called Radical to discuss and ask about specific items and your people were totally helpful and knowledgeable.
Keep up the good work. I recommend Radical RC to all my flying buddies.
Steve’s built a beautiful 1905. He has added some scale detail including flying wires and pilot.
We can clearly see a pilot capable of flying this model right in it’s sweetest spot, low and slow.
I was at our local field last week, and one of the guys took 60 some jpg’s of the Flyer. Some turned out excellent…! I did a low and slow fly by (didn’t think it was quite that low!) and he caught the whole sequence. I also really like the turn down wind… Use any that you might like.
Thanks for providing the great photography Steve.
Hey Dave. I just wanted to let you know that I am very happy with my shipment. It was the charging cable for JR/Spektrum batteries. It was not only packed incredibly well, but it got here in just a few days for only $3 in shipping. Thank you very much and I can honestly say I do plan on doing business with you again as well as recommending you to all of the guys in the RC club! I hope you have many great days ahead of you 🙂
Attached is a photo of a B-17 making a flyby over Wright Field. I think the shadow is about where your building’s located. Notice Huffman Dam and the train heading towards Fairborn on the old Big 4 RR.
Show this to Richard. He stopped by my tables at the Hara Arena Train Show a couple of weeks ago and I told him about this picture.
This series of posts created from email correspondence between Keith and I. He’s really done a lot of neat things to this kit. Expect a new report every Thursday for at least 5 weeks. Keith is in the AMA Hall of Fame. He is one of the fathers of modern day electric flight, a superb scale builder and solid modeler in many ways. Read more on the AMA website: Autobiography of KEITH SHAW
You can meet Keith every year at the Mid-America Flies electric fly in where he and Ken Myers of the EFO club host the longest running electric power meet in the country if not the world. Both are AMA Hall Of Fame members. Lots of scale modelers attend this event. Your sure to see many very nice hand built models here. The event is usually held in June and is always announced in the Ampeer Newsletter.
On to the first installment of Keith’s 1905 Wright Flyer Project:
First up is the dummy engine and magneto. Engine is made from foamboard, card stock, bits of lite-ply, dowel, and the chain is a section from a cheap necklace. Magneto is carved from pink foam.
Pilot is from Toys R Us, a “True Heros Fire Rescue, Robert Portman”. Very close to 1/7th scale. Had to use heat gun and some carving to pose him onto the necessary prone pilot position. Figure comes with boots and a bright yellow suit with day-go emergency strips. Fortunately the strips were sewed on, so easily removed. The uniform required some tailoring to make it look more like a 1900’s suit. The collar, tie and cuffs are all thin painted card stock. Toughest thing was trying to dye the bright yellow cloth to look right. The fabric is polyester and not easy to color. Tried RIT, then some aniline dyes without luck. Finally took a black magic marker apart, diluted the liquid, ad soaked the fabric overnight. It came out a black-green, and looks acceptable. I still have to make a cap for Orville, looking for better photos of that type of “Duster” cap he always wore.
