Matching a Prop to the Engine

Fuel engines are rated for a range of propeller sizes, expressed as diameter and pitch. A larger diameter or higher pitch loads the engine more heavily and lowers its running speed, while a smaller prop lets it turn faster. Staying inside the range the engine maker specifies keeps the motor in its intended power band and avoids overloading it.

Diameter sets how much air the prop moves and pitch sets how far it tries to travel forward each turn, so a trainer, a sport model, and an aerobatic airplane may each call for a different balance even on the same displacement engine.
