Almost exclusively used in wood in our hobby. The term "Sheet Metal Screw" effectively means the threads go all the way to the head and that the thread body is a constant diameter (excepting the tip). Traditionally wood screws have an un-threaded portion under the head and the screw body will often have a long taper meaning it gradually gets larger in diameter as you move from the tip towards the head. While this might be better when your hanging a door in your house, it's not the prefered type of screw when your pre-drilling a hole for the screw as we are almost always doing in the RC model hobby.

Small Sheet Metal Screws
Sheet metal screws cut their own mating threads as they drive, which makes them useful well beyond metal for holding parts in thin plastic, plywood, and light assemblies. This category focuses on the small diameters that suit model and hobby work.
Sizes and Head Styles
The listings run in small gauges from #0 through #3, in lengths such as 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 inch, so you can match the screw to the thickness of the material. Most are Phillips head, with a button head option in the #2 size for a lower, rounded profile.
Small sheet metal screws are handy for tasks like securing hatches, mounting light brackets, and other jobs where a self-threading fastener saves cutting threads by hand. The self-tapping tip bites into a pilot hole and holds.
Look over the gauges, lengths, and head styles above to pick the sheet metal screws for your project.
