Slow Stick Aileron Conversion Set

Slow Stick Aileron Conversion Set

Trick parts for adding Ailerons to your slow stick. These horns are special and differ from the tail horns. Comes with servo mounting pads, stick these down with Foam Safe CA, GWS glue included with Slow Sticks or any other foam safe adhesive. Pad is made from 1/64th aircraft ply so it is flexible and will match contour of wing easily. Glue servo (CA or Goop) to pad. (servos glued directly to the foam can be torn off easily). Spacers are provided so you can adjust horn to fit 4 or 5mm thick wings. Enough parts to do both ailerons on one wing.

The aileron is cut out from the stock GWS molding on the back of the wing. Here is how I did it.

Instructions:
1.Press hobby pins through the color side at the corners of the aileron hinge line depression molded into the wing. Glue a balsa block to the side of your hobby knife so only about 1/8" of the blade sticks past the block. This block becomes a stop for the next step to stop you from cutting too deeply. Flip the wing over and put a steel straight edge against the pins (we are now working from the white or bottom side of the wing). Use your altered hobby knife to slice the foam from pin to pin in a straight line without piercing through the top surface or colored skin of the wing. 2. Line up a steel straight edge on the top surface of the wing and cut the cordwise lines (those going for and aft) at the ends of the aileron. Once cut, Move your rule over about 1/32" and take an extra sliver out. This way the edges of the aileron won't touch and bind as it moves back and forth.

3: Aileron is now free. Flex the aileron towards the colored side and the foam will crack up (from the bottom) to colored skin.

4: Hold the aileron so it's vertical or 90 to the top surface and use a sanding bar to sand the hinge line down flat so that both the wing and the aileron end up with a 45 degree bevel in the hinge line. BUT WAIT! When you sand, do so carefully, as you see the color (of the top surface skin) begining to peek through the foam, stop sanding. You don't want to cut this skin. The top skin becomes a living hinge. I added Blenderm tape to the bottom of my hinge line while it was flexed up to make sure I had a durable hinge.

Step 5 Warning! Your making each wing a mirror image of of the other, look carefully so both servos are placed opposite each other, pads are betweed same ribs and offset to similarly relative to the center of the wing.

5: Glue servo pad to wing. GWS foam glue or any other foam safe CA may be used. After the pads are cured, glue your servos to the servo pad. Cut the slot in the aileron so the holes in the horn are lined up over the hinge line you just cut in. Use the spacers (one long one aginst the foam) so the when the clip is installed the horn is snug. Remove, add glue and put back together. Make pushrod from .055 wire (same stuff used for slow stick pushrods) and your done.

Testing Y Harness

Testing Y Harness

This nifty Y harness invented and available exclusively at Radical RC is handy to use for loaded voltage and current testing of your radio system. Here is what it can help you do:

1. Use in conjunction with an amp meter to test current to any one servo or between the battery pack and the entire system. 2. Use a combo of your amp meter and ESV to see how far your battery voltage is depressing at a given load. 3. Use in combination with our ESV to see what your voltage is while your system switch is on. A jumper plug is used to complete the connection when your doing volt only and no amp tests. Regular hobby battery test and charge cords (you probably already own) can be used to interact with this Y harness.

Here is how is how to use me:
To measure current. First set your meter to measure amps and set it one setting higher than you expect to measure so as not to damage your meter. For a typical aircraft you might start at 5 or 10 amps range to be safe. You can reduce the range later (if that is an option) once you know your not going to over drive it. For many digital meters you'll have only two settings, one low like 300mah or less and one for over 300mah up to 10 amps. Use the higher of these two settings for most applications. Unplug the jumper plug. The jumper plug is shown unplugged above at the top of the photo. Plug your JR or Futaba RX charge cord in where the jumper was (notice all black wires here) plug the banana ends of your charge cord into your meter (most meters use standard 4mm banana inputs) correctly. Your meter completes the ground wire connection between your battery and your RX or Servo (or whatever load your checking). Run your device and take your reading.

To measure voltage, Set meter for DC, if it has a set of ranges, choose a lower range like up to 10V (this setting should be above what you expect to measure). Plug the jumper back in and plug your charge cord into the other arm of the Y. Plug the banana plugs from your charge cord into your meters volt check inputs. Take reading.

If you have 2 meters, you can test voltage and amps load at the same instant. Also, with 2 Test Y Harnesses, you can take readings between the battery and also at a distant servo. Maybe you want to know how much voltage drop there is at the end of the line in your tail servos for example. In this case you need to know the loaded voltage at the battery and also at the distant servo to see what the actual drop in your wiring harness's really is. If you only measure at the servo your total voltage drop will be the total of the wiring and the battery and not just the wiring.

Not reccomended for any in-flight applications.

Radical RC Micro Bipe

Get out the fly swatter boys!

If you've grown comfortable with our Micro Stick, perhaps you are ready for the Micro Bipe. This aggressive little beast does not know it shouldn't be able to fly. Kit comes with all the parts required to build with the large top wing (13.8" span pictured) for intermediate pilots or the small top wing (only 10.8"!!!) for the bolder more advanced pilots. Comes complete with pushrod wire, horns, rod end keepers, landing gear wire and wheels.

Suggested (not included) components are Medusa 12mm 4000kv outrunner, 2-3 6g or smaller servos, Micro RX like Berg 4 (sub 10 gram), 350 to 760mah 2S HD lipo pack, props to suit motor with adapters and lots of testosterone! She can be tamed quite a bit with the large top wing but we warn you; she's pure aggression with the small top wing. Build her wisely!

If you select a 72mhz Berg receiver (RX), tell us which channel you need at checkout.

The Micro Bipe weighs in at 4.5 to 5.5 ounces depending on equipment choices. Kit exhibits our new ultra-rugged Space-Frame doublers and inline Formers, both Radical RC innovations in the RC Kit Field. Like most of our kits, 90% of it may be assembled prior to gluing due to the close fit of the lazer cut parts.

If your thinking of other motor, mini outrunners & etc., the requirements are 30 watts plus and 50mph pitch speed or more. Only the smallest lightest motors should be considered.

Additional photo showing both Eindecker and Sport versions. Either version can be built from the kit. The TX is shown in photo to demonstate scale only. (Note, manual and above recommendations are now outdated and similar products should be substituted.)

* Asterisk items are Our first and favorite picks. All items listed are good choices.

The Medusa 4000kv on GWS 3-3 prop is my all around favorite setup. A 4-2.5 prop may also be used for less speed and better climb on the 4000kv motor (Requires adapter to 4mm prop). Optionally the RRC 4500 on 3-3 is also good. For more extreme performance, the Medusa 5300 on 3-2 or 3-3 prop and 2S battery. Be sure to get the Fox Lite mount for any 12mm motor. The 3" GWS props press directly onto 1.5mm shaft motors, the 1.5mm reamer is suggested below to ease pressing on the prop. 1.5mm motor shafts are more easily bent, 2mm shaft motors are also offered. They require drilling the prop out with a #49 (.073") bit and have more rugged shafts.

* Indicates my favored choices.

Custom Extension Male-Male Vinyl Insulation

Custom Extension as listed above except Male to Male plug. Used for some power box and other misc uses. This custom extension will have 2 ends that look just like a servo end.

Micro Lite: This type of wire is used most commonly in applications with small servos (.5 oz weight or less usually) in park flyers, foamies, sailplanes, DLG's and other models with low servo loads. You can save a bunch of weight eliminting beefy stock wiring from these smaller models.

26 Gauge Standard: This wire is what you find in most new radio sets and on most mid size to full size standard torque 4 screw mountable servos. This ribbon wire size is a good wire choice for those types of servos (and smaller) if the runs are 24" or less. Good for smaller servos in long runs such as sailplane wings and similar. For example, great for you 60" cub but use 20 gauge your outfitting a 100" Cub.

22 Gauge Heavy Duty: Use for all larger models and anyplace a high torque or digital servo might be used. Use for standard torque servos if your runs are very long (over 24")

(Note, old Futaba G parts are made with 26 guage pigtails regardless of wire choice)

Hansen Hobbies NERS V2 Nano Electronic Receiver Switch

This is Version 2 of our popular NERS. It plugs into one of your receiver channels and lets you turn a device on/off using a stick, switch, or knob on your transmitter. The device may be driven with RX power up to 10v or a separate battery up to 20V. The NERS performs the operation equivalent to a servo moving a mechanical switch back and forth, but in a much smaller package, and with no moving parts! The NERS will operate with any receiver running on 2-10V and can switch on/off pretty much any device up to 4A (5A for <5s) of current. The NERS V2 is perfect for lights, glow plug drivers, motors, smoke pumps, rocket igniters, solenoids, relays, and whatever else you can think up. Wired correctly, it could be used to trigger cameras or other electronic devices.

If you don't mind doing a bit of soldering, the NERS V2 can be easily reversed and assigned a fail-safe setting. The NERS V2 was designed to use the power from your receiver battery, or use a separate battery, up to 20V.

You may be wondering how the NERS V2 compares to the PERS, so here is a quick breakdown:
The NERS V2 can handle up to 10V from the receiver whereas the PERS is limited to 6V
The NERS V2 can handle a bit more current
The wiring for connecting a separate battery is much easier with the NERS V2
The NERS V2 has the option of having an integrated universal connector, making it the smallest possible solution for that connector type

Du-Bro 2mm x 762mm (30") Threaded Rods, Each

2mm x 762mm (30") threaded on one end pushrod. 1 each.

The DU-BRO 2mm Threaded Rods (30" / 762 mm) - give RC hobbyists a strong and reliable option for building custom control linkages. Made from high-quality steel, these rods provide excellent strength and stability for many types of RC models, including airplanes, helicopters, drones, cars, and boats. The clean 2mm machine threading fits smoothly with DU-BRO ball links, Kwik-Links, connectors, and most metric hardware.

Each rod is 30 inches (762 mm) long, making them ideal for long control runs, large fuselages, multi-servo setups, or detailed custom builds. You can cut and shape the rods to the exact length you need, and they will still keep their strong threads and rigid structure. This helps prevent flexing or unwanted play in your control system.

Their extra length and stiffness make these rods perfect for larger electric models, glow or gas aircraft, giant-scale planes, or any model where strength and accuracy matter. They help deliver smooth, consistent control and also reduce strain on your servos--especially important for high-performance flying or aerobatic routines.

This 6-piece pack offers great value for builders working on multiple aircraft or stocking their workshop. DU-BRO hardware has been trusted for decades, and these 2mm threaded rods continue that tradition of quality, reliability, and ease of use. They are a must-have item for any serious RC builder.

This item qualifies as a Rod Stock Item, read below: Rod Stock Policy:

In order to include long skinny products at our very favorable shipping rates: All USA orders that contain rod-stock items need to contain at least 6 rods. Rod stock is anything over 30". This would include Music Wire, Carbon Rods of any kind, larger Pushrod kits, brass or aluminum rods and anything else of that nature. Thinner items like carbon strips .5mm thick, sub 1mm diameter carbon rods and music wire .020 or thinner ordered in quantities less than 6 rods total will be shipped coiled. Unless otherwise stated, all carbon rod stock is pull-truded construction grade. The resin is heat cured as the fibers are pulled through a die of the proper shape. Sizes are approximate usually within 5%. Weight is in grams per meter, as per the manufacturer documentation, no guarantees on weight.

Advice from Dave on setting voltage: For simulating a typical 4.8V RX pack set voltage 5.1 to 5.4. For simulating a 6V pack, set voltage to 6.4 to 6.8. Battery packs are not any set voltage but work over a range of voltages. Think about what your trying to simulate. A 4.8v pack is empty at about 4.4v, full at about 6v. A 6v pack is empty at 5.5 and full at about 7.5. For heli's where the tail servo and gyro won't take 6v packs, what the MFG is saying is it won't take 7.5V. Setting heli voltage to even 5.8 or 5.9 is fine as it just looks like a 4.8V pack hot off the charger. For older 2.4GHZ systems (Anything not Hitec/Airtronics and pre 2011 gear) we reccomend setting voltage to 5.4-6V range MINIMUM.
